20 Things We Not-So-Secretly Judge Others For

Published:

We’ve all been there, quietly judging others from the sidelines for those bad habits that rub us the wrong way. While it’s natural to form opinions based on what we see, some behaviors universally trigger silent judgment.

From the mildly annoying to the outright unacceptable, here are 20 things we secretly judge other people for:

1. Loud Talk

Something is annoying about people who talk loudly on speaker phones in public spaces. Whether in a café, on the bus, or walking down the street, their disregard for others’ peace shows a lack of basic etiquette. It invades the auditory space of those around them and forces them to partake in one side of a conversation they have no interest in.

2. Aisle Laggers

Grocery shopping can be a test of patience, especially when people stand in the middle of the aisle, oblivious to others trying to pass. We’re not sure if they lack awareness or have no consideration for others – it turns a simple shopping trip into an exercise in frustration as we wait for the aisle to clear.

3. Inattentive Parents

Some parents ignore their children in public, allowing them to run amok or disturb others, which can be distressing to everyone around them. This is not just poor parenting; it’s frustrating that they are failing to teach children respect for public spaces and the people in them.

4. Litterbugs

Littering speaks volumes about a person’s respect for the environment and communal spaces. Witnessing someone casually throw trash on the ground can trigger judgments about their character and disregard for the planet.

5. Double Parking

Taking up two parking spaces is a prime example of selfish behavior in public. This act inconveniences others and seems like a blatant display of entitlement.

6. Being Rude to Retail and Restaurant Employees

Observing someone being rude to employees is uncomfortable and tells a lot about their respect for others. It reflects a lack of empathy and understanding for the hard work these individuals put into their jobs.

7. Not Scooping up Their Dog’s Poop

Pet owners who don’t clean up after their dogs lack responsibility and consideration for their community. It’s not just unsightly; it’s unsanitary and disrespectful to others sharing the space.

8. Not Leashing Their Dogs

Allowing dogs to roam freely where leashes are required poses a risk to the animal, other people, and pets. This behavior is often judged as negligent and inconsiderate.

9. Leaving Shopping Carts in the Middle of the Parking Lot

Failing to return shopping carts is a minor action that speaks to a person’s consideration for others. It creates unnecessary obstacles and works for store employees and shoppers alike.

10. Complaining Repeatedly Without Action

Hearing someone complain about the same issues without taking steps to address them can be tiresome. We often judge them and their unwillingness to take responsibility for their happiness or situation.

11. Not Washing Hands After Using the Restroom

This basic hygiene misstep is not only seen as gross but also as a disregard for the health and well-being of others. It’s a small act with big implications for personal cleanliness and respect for communal health.

12. Wearing Giant Fake Eyelashes

Though a matter of personal style, huge fake eyelashes can sometimes draw silent judgments about someone’s taste or their emphasis on natural beauty versus artificial enhancements.

13. Getting Huge Bum Implants

Like with fake eyelashes, opting for significantly enhanced body modifications such as large bum implants can lead to assumptions about a person’s self-esteem, body image issues, or views on attractiveness.

14. Not Using Turn Signals When Driving

This neglect is not just annoying; it’s dangerous. It signifies a lack of concern for the safety of others on the road and a fundamental disregard for driving etiquette.

15. Poor Spelling and Grammar

While not everyone is a grammar expert, consistent mistakes with common words can lead to judgments about a person’s education or attention to detail.

16. Being Chronically Late

Habitual tardiness is often interpreted as a lack of respect for others’ time. It can suggest that the individual sees their time as more valuable than those waiting for them.

17. Bad Table Manners

Eating habits can say much about a person’s upbringing or respect for dining companions. Poor table manners can be off-putting and are often silently criticized.

18. Driving Loud Cars

The choice to drive a vehicle that makes excessive noise can seem like a cry for attention. It’s frequently seen as inconsiderate, especially in residential areas or late at night.

19. Social Unawareness

People who lack social cues or are oblivious to how their actions affect others can be frustrated. This lack of awareness is often judged as either naivety or selfishness.

20. Smoking in the Car With Kids

This behavior is not only judged but also widely condemned. It reflects a disregard for the health and well-being of children, exposing them to harmful second-hand smoke in a confined space.
