The 15 States Where Adults Are Just Super Stressed

There are a lot of things that can make people feel stressed out. There is work-related stress, family-related stress, money-related stress, and health-and-safety-related stress. Forty indicators of stress were looked at when determining which states have the most stress.

Many types of stress were looked at as well as the amount of adults who get enough sleep, how many hours are worked each week, etc. According to WalletHub, these are the states where people are the most stressed.

In order to determine the most and least stressed states, WalletHub compared the 50 states across four key dimensions: 1) Work-Related Stress, 2) Money-Related Stress, 3) Family-Related Stress, 4) Health- & Safety-Related Stress.

They evaluated those dimensions using 40 relevant metrics, which are listed below with their corresponding weights. Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing the highest level of stress.

They then determined each state’s weighted average across all metrics to calculate its overall score and used the resulting scores to rank-order the states.

Louisiana

Louisiana has a lot of stress due to the high rate of poverty and the amount of violence and property crime the state has. It rates near the top for both health-and-safety-relates and work-related stress. It has an overall stress score of 57.84.

Mississippi

Mississippi’s poor economy has led it to rank worst for money-related stress. The state has the country’s highest rate of poverty, and it has the worst job security, leading to work-related stress. It has a score of 57.78.

Nevada

Nevada is ranked as the state with the most family-related stress. It also ranked highly for its health-and-safety-related stress with many people rarely visiting doctors because of the cost. It has a 57.42 score.

New Mexico

New Mexico has a high poverty rate, and it ranks very highly for both family-related stress and money-related stress. It also has problems with health and safety. Its overall score is 55.77.

Arkansas

Arkansas ranks the worst in the country for health-and-safety-related stress. It has a lot of unhealthy people who don’t see a doctor as often as they should. It also ranks very high for money-related stress. It has an overall score of 53.16.

West Virginia

West Virginia ranks second for health-and-safety-related stress and also has a high score for its money-related stress. Its family-related stress isn’t great, either. The state gets a score of 52.04.

Alabama

Alabama ranks second out of all states for its money-related stress. It’s also ranked highly for health and safety-related stress. The high poverty rate undoubtedly affects both these rates. It has a score of 51.73.

Kentucky

People in Kentucky are ranked very highly for money-related stress, and they also have a great deal of work-related stress. The economy of the state could be better, contributing to a lot of stress for residents. It has a score of 50.82.

Oklahoma

This state has a very high ranking for the health and safety-related stress of its residents. People in this state also have significant stress about money. Its score is 50.57.

Texas

With its high ranking for work-related stress, Texans have a lot to worry about. They’re also stressing about their families and their health and safety. The state scores a 50.49.

Tennessee

With its score of 50.16, Tennessee residents are dealing with plenty of stress. They are especially stressed out about their health and safety and worry over money.

New York

New York ranks third for its family-related stress. This may be from issues surrounding daycare and schooling. It also scores high for work-related stress. The state gets a 49.33.

Oregon

There are a lot of people in Oregon worried about money and full of stress about their health and wellness. It does pretty well, however, with its low level of work stress. It scores a 48.40.

Alaska

This state is full of stressful jobs and problems with job security, giving it the top position for work-related stress. It also has a high level of health and safety-related stress. It scores a 47.31.

Georgia

The Peach State has a lot of people worried about their health and wellness. It also has a lot of money-related stress. It’s in the middle of the pack for work-related and family-related stress. Georgia scores a 46.65.
