15 Expenses Middle-Class Americans Are Saying “No” Too

Published:

It’s 2024, and we’re not gonna take it anymore!

Here are fifteen expenses or purchases that were so last year!

Bottled Water

It’s not good for the environment or your wallet, so kick your water bottle habit to the curb! Opt for reusable, BPA-free bottles that are a one-time purchase instead.

Brand Name Products

Sure, it’s nice to treat yourself to something if there’s a noticeable difference in quality. But have you ever tried the generic? Go for it the next time you’re at the store: you’ll be surprised.

Gym Memberships You Never Use

Gym memberships can be costly. But if you never go, then they’re an absolute waste. Be honest about whether or not you’ll go, and don’t just sign up because of the “new year, new you” mentality.

Automatic Renewals

Forgotten subscriptions can eat away at your funds if you aren’t careful. Audit your subscriptions, cancel the ones you don’t use, and profit.

Gas

It’s not always possible for you to bike or walk to your destination. But if it is, do it. It’s healthy for you, and it saves you money!

Impulse Buys

Put down the candy bar and think for a second. Sure, it’s just one candy bar. But throughout 2024, choosing not to give in to your impulses can yield serious savings.

MLMs

If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it’s probably a duck. In this instance, the duck in question is an essential oils business from someone you went to high school with — don’t fall for it.

Timeshares

These always sound nice in theory but rarely ever work out in practice. It’s an ongoing expense you’ll barely get any mileage out of for the cost.

Too Much Produce

Be realistic: you aren’t going to eat that much spinach this week. Food waste isn’t just problematic; it’s insanely expensive. Go with a list and stick to it.

Paying to Work

Too many “opportunities” out there will get you off the ground floor — provided you float them some cash first. You shouldn’t have to pay to apply for a job you’re getting paid for, and this year, you won’t!

Extended Warranties

Extending your warranty is overpriced, and most people will never even need it. You’re better off saving your money and using it toward repairing the appliance if something goes awry.

Interest

It’s time to get serious about paying down that credit card or loan debt. You might as well be setting your money on fire if you’re stuck paying lots of credit card interest.

Shipping and Delivery Fees

Convenience can still be king if that’s your thing. But you’re not getting a very good deal once you start doubling the cost of whatever you’re buying, whether a pizza or a couch from Sweden.

Streaming Services

Streaming services have quickly become a racket. If you’re only keeping Netflix for one or two shoes, you can probably live without it.

Fancy Cleaning Products

Yeah, that lemon verbena cleaner you purchased is fair trade and smells terrific. Still, you can get the same results with ingredients you probably have lying around your house — AND you won’t be exposed to harsh chemicals if you’re just using lemon, baking soda, and some white vinegar.
